We rely on the beverage can

Here you can find out why.

“In Germany, more beverage cans are being handed in at the deposit machines than ever before. On the other hand, the proportion of beverage cans in the waste carelessly thrown into the environment fell to 0.03 percent in 2019, according to a new study by the Society for Packaging Market Research (GVM). At the same time, the recycling rate for aluminum beverage cans in Germany rose to 99.3%, and for steel cans to 99.7%. This is the highest recycling value for beverage packaging in the world. Stephan Rösgen, spokesman for the Beverage Can Forum: “Cans do not end up in nature, but are the prime example of a functioning cycle product. This makes beverage cans the recycling champions among beverage packaging.” In total, around 267,000 tons of rubbish are carelessly thrown away or left lying around in Germany. This corresponds to 3.21 kilograms per inhabitant. Cans account for only 0.03 percent of the litter quantity. Other packaging accounts for 20.6% of the litter (INFA, 2020). "The GVM figures show that over 4 billion billion beverage cans find their way back into the cycle," says Stephan Rösgen. With 99.3 percent recycled aluminum and 99.7 percent for tinplate beverage cans, the record for the circular product is also achieved further expanded during recycling. "The deposit gives us a functioning incentive system that protects the environment by not leaving beverage cans behind," says Stephan Rösgen. In the meantime - with the new packaging law - 100 percent of all beverage cans in Germany are subject to a deposit. says Rösgen. The GVM study was carried out on behalf of ThyssenKrupp Rasselstein GmbH, DAVR GmbH and Forum Flaschendose GbR. You can find more information about the beverage can at: https://recyclingmeister.de/"

Consumer benefits

"Easy". This property of the beverage can is particularly important for the consumer: due to its low weight, it is easy to transport, easy to open and quick and easy to cool. In addition, the dose is unbreakable and therefore also suitable for large events. The typical "hissing" sound tells the consumer when opening the beverage can that the contents are absolutely fresh.

Benefits for manufacturers

For beverage producers, the optimal quality of their contents with a long shelf life is guaranteed. Because the beverage can is the only packaging that is absolutely leak-proof. Thanks to the excellent barrier properties and the hermetic seal, it is particularly suitable for light- and oxygen-sensitive beverages.

As packaging, the beverage can is very cost-efficient for the bottler: it has a favorable weight ratio of content and packaging: only three percent is packaging, 97 percent product. The large opening also allows high filling speeds and, due to the stackability and low weight, offers optimal volume efficiency during storage and distribution.

Benefits for trader

The volume efficiency of the beverage can also has advantages for the trade, because it requires less space on the supermarket shelf – and thus also saves costs. The advantages of the unbreakable packaging include not only its volume advantages, but also the simpler handling - especially when sorting the empties with less effort. This was the result of the litigation cost comparison of the 2009 EHI study.
